Title:  Plague Ship

Authors:  Clive Cussler and Jack DuBrul

Publisher:  Putnam

Reviewer: Jeff Edwards – AAA Member

Laced with adrenaline, Plague Ship is a seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned cliff-hanging fun.

From the outside, the Oregon looks like a rusty old cargo ship at the end of her service life. But concealed beneath a veneer of cosmetic aging and simulated corrosion lurks a state-of-the-art warship, crammed to the gunwales with high-tech sensors and weapon systems. The Oregon is fast, lethal, and extremely covert. She has to be; she’s the headquarters and flagship of the Corporation, a team of freelance operatives who undertake clandestine (and usually hazardous) missions on behalf of certain US agencies.

In command of the Oregon is Juan Cabrillo, Chairman of the Corporation, and the tactical genius behind the ship’s impressive record of success. This time out of the box, Juan and his crew have drawn an easy mission. All they have to do is penetrate the security of an Iranian naval installation, steal a pair of deadly rocket-torpedoes, and slip out before the Iranian’s realize that they’ve been robbed. Of course — in order to get away with the heist — they also have to outrun the Iranian Navy. The resulting sea chase contains some of the tightest and most exciting naval combat sequences to ever reach the printed page, but even that’s just the warm-up.

Juan and the Oregon team find themselves on a collision course with a cult of fanatics who are preparing to unleash a bio-engineered plague that will utterly alter the future of the human species, at the cost of a few billion lives. It starts with a virulent outbreak aboard a luxury cruise ship. When the virus begins to take effect, it rips through the passengers and crew like wildfire, leaving everyone either dead or dying.

The crew of the Oregon must piece together the clues before the plague is unleashed on an unsuspecting world. The trail leads into the past, back through the horrors of World War II and beyond, into the very mists of history and legend.

Plague Ship is the quintessential edge-of-the-seat adventure novel. Clive Cussler and Jack DuBrul have proven once again that they own the action adventure genre.
