Title: Old Man of the Mountains: The Story of Peter Voiss, California’s Most Notorious, Eccentric Gold Prospector of the 20th Century Author: Brookelea Heintz Lutton Publisher: Gold Dust Publishing Reviewer: Marilyn Meredith – AAA Member I love books like this that introduce the reader to a fascinating character that we’d never have known about if someone hadn’t take the time to write about him or her. Because I’m a Californian, I’m even more interested in tales about people who added to the color and fascination about my state. There still are people prospecting for gold in the California mountains and hills, but none as strange as Peter Voiss. Though this story is about Peter’s life during the 30s and 40s, Peter never embraced any of the inventions of his time that made most people’s life easier. Instead, he chose to live out of a make-shift wagon pulled by his true friends–burros. Ms. Lutton has captured Peter’s quest for gold, his love for his burros, and how out-of-place he was on the routes he traveled so often. An interesting read for lovers of obscure bits of California history. To learn more or to purchase your copy, please visit the authors website: www.golddustpublishing.com
