Title:  Andi and the Bee

Author:  Phil Silver

Publisher:  PBJ Books

Reviewer: Jeff Edwards – AAA member

Andi the Bee is a delightful tale about overcoming physical disabilities, and finding the strength within ourselves.

One morning, Boga Bear wakes up to find the forest abuzz with excitement. Ants have gotten into the bee hive, and the bees are going crazy. They’ve worked hard to make their honey, and now uninvited strangers are taking it without permission.

Boga calls for a meeting of the ‘Friends of the Forest.’ Quickly, the animals assemble to discuss how to help the bees in their time of crisis. The friends decide that the Queen Bee should visit the Queen Ant, and the two queens should work together to find a solution.

But the Queen Bee is much too large to enter the tunnels of the ant colony. She’ll never fit, and neither will any of the other bees in the hive. Except one…

Andi is the smallest bee in the hive. She was sick a lot when she was growing up, and her wings didn’t form correctly, so she can’t fly. This doesn’t stop Andi from working hard, and trying her best.

The Queen Bee sends Andi to visit the ant colony, and carry a note to the Queen Ant. It’s a difficult journey, because Andi can’t fly. She has to walk all the way to her destination.

At last, she reaches the ant colony, and delivers the note to the Queen of the ants. The Queen Ant is surprised to learn that her ants have invaded the bee hive. She writes a note in return, and asks Andi to carry it back to the Queen Bee. Through their notes, and Andi’s courageous work, they solve their problems and restore harmony to the forest.

Andi the Bee is heartwarming, with clever illustrations that are sure to keep children turning the pages.
